I <3 THIS WALL

London-based Philip Smiley's installation "Freakscape" draws inspiration from his rural upbringing in Virginia. Philip explores the curiosity and carelessness of youth set in a mysterious environment of surreal wilderness.
Incorporating a variety of media including illustration, sculpture and found objects, Philip aims to convey the feeling of ever encroaching nature over what appears to be an innocent, and perhaps naive, scene.
Philip Smiley has been a freelance illustrator since graduating with an MA from the School of Visual Arts, New York in 1999. He has designed graphics & illustrated for many major fashion labels (Burberry, Commes des Garcons, Stella McCartney). His work has also been featured in publications including Dazed & Confused, Spin, Blackbook and books such as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
